NAISA Radio – Celebrating Indigenous Sounds & Voices

NAISA Radio broadcasts experimental radio art and sound art.

NAISA Radio

NAISA Radio, run by New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA), is a Canadian sound art platform that helps share Indigenous voices and look into the many different sounds and stories from Indigenous communities. Through curated radio programs, immersive installations, and projects where people from the community get involved, NAISA Radio shows how closely Indigenous cultures are connected to sound. ### Indigenous Soundscapes and Storytelling NAISA Radio looks into the idea of Noodaagun, which means Indigenous sound waves in Anishinabe, and it focuses on how stories and traditions are shared orally in Indigenous communities. These traditions share a lot of Indigenous history and ways of knowing, and people have passed these down to each other over time. The “Cross Waves” radio series features sound work by Indigenous artists from across Canada, letting people hear different styles that share Ind ### Community-Driven Sound Projects Emphasizing community involvement, NAISA Radio has started the Almaguin Highlands Community Soundscapes, where local people put audio recorders in bird feeders at night in the spring, and the recordings picked up bird sounds like peepers, woodpeckers, and Canada geese. In this project, local people put audio recorders in bird feeders at night in spring so they could record bird sounds like peepers, woodpeckers, and Canada geese .([Naisa][3]) NAISAs commitment to Indigenous artistry shows up in the Deep Wireless albums, where they feature radio and sound art by people like Janet Rogers, Elizabeth Hill, and John Hill, who blend their stories and sounds with modern technology. The 16th edition, called Digital in Nature, includes artists like Janet Rogers, Elizabeth Hill, and John Hill from Indigenous communities, mixing stories from their culture with new ideas in sound art .([Naisa][4])   NAISA
